It Can Be Expensive

Of all the disadvantages of using digital video cameras this is probably the most challenging.

But who cares about that! If you are a real enthusiast then it is as much about the equipment as it is the end result.

Yes there is a high initial cost to pay, but it has fallen, quite considerably in recent years. But I wonder if like me, you feel that you have to aim for at least a certain standard of digital video camera, past the basic models at least.

There is a kind of confidence that comes from owning better equipment. I’m convinced it improves your technique, even if it is an intangible benefit. An antidote to one of the disadvantages of using digital video cameras.

Once you have purchased your new digital video camera you then have to plough through the manual to understand all its functions.

Two digital video camera batteriesThis is one of those problems that happens to everyone at some point who starts to use a digital video camera.

At some point in time you will run down your battery, the problem is that this will coincide exactly at the same point that you see an unmissable shot!

This sort of problem will only happen to you once I assure you. There is nothing more annoying than running out of power, oh and er, don’t forget to take the charger with you if you are going away. That’s another great one that catches out the unwary.

Experience will teach you to carry a spare battery at all times, because you never know…

Why Trade Up To A Digital Video Camera?

Most analogue video camcorders can offer extremely high quality videos to be saved and shared much the same way as digital video, and in some instances offer better quality, even though that is changing on a monthly basis.

The zoom capabilities on a regular tape camcorder may seem limited when compared to the numbers presented by the digital video units, but don’t let that be the final deciding factor.

Digital video camera graphic 1Camcorders are limited to optical zoom, which is done through the manipulation of the glass lenses. Optical zoom brings an image closer to where only a certain portion of the picture will fit into the frame. Typically, a twelve-power zoom is available on most consumer market units.

Digital video cameras are pushing zoom numbers of a previously unheard of level in the hundreds. They will have a certain optical zoom capability then switch to digital zoom.

Optical zoom is performed inside the camera where an image is taken in its actual size, or as large as the optical zoom allows, then digitally increases its size. This can result in poor image quality and in some of the larger zoom sizes; the pixels of the picture will be visible.
